from Blackdog: I have 3 Rangers and a Medley limited edition. I sold my American Deluxe Fat Strat with Rio Grande 'calibrated set' after I found my Rangers 2 and 3. Guess why! Also, I am friendly with the guy who builds Fralin's custom Strats and I played his own Telecaster with Fralins in it. It played nice, but cannot match my Robin Ranger Custom from the 80's (3 rear loaded Rio Grandes)or the 90's RRC with front loaded set of 3 Rios.
I welcome a reply from anyone who feels confident about replying to this: In a Medley with mahogany neck, rosewood, maple on mahogany body and Kahler tremolo and locking nut... I am considering a RG BBQ humbucker in the bridge and the Kinman AVn 62 and 56 in the middle and neck, respectively. Am I likely to get a mismatch or a tone monster?
Also, has anyone assigned a separate volume control for the humbucker so it is always 'on' in every switch position? I like the idea of simply using a dual concentric pot with inner knob for HB and the outer for the regular volume. that would allow the HB to be fed in a little or a lot with any other pickup or combination of them that is avaliable thru the switch. Then use a push/pull tone control to coil tap the HB. This gets most of what we want in a Tele knob/Strat 5-way switch arrangement found in Rangers. Reasonable?
