I'm interested in buying a Savoy -- but have never had a chance to play one. Any thoughts how the Savoy compares to a nice (say 50's) 335, or other thoughts re the guitar. They sure a re beautiful, and a friend said they play and sound absolutely great. I'm going to buy one anyway, but would love whatever feedback I can get. Thanks a lot - Jeff

I bought a Savoy last month and none of my initial impressions have changed: it is a player with fabulous tone and feel.
As compared to a 335, it is a little less "hollow", however, much more controlable and suited for live (loud) playing. The detail and design finish out is excellent. I guess another level of review is the Rio Grande pickups which a set will be finding a way into my Les Paul this week.

I love my savoy, and often think of asking dave wintz to build a seven string savoy for me...oooohh that would be nice.http://robinlovers.com/discus/messages/1292/420.jpg

Jeff,
My Savoy does not sound like any 335's I've played, but reminds me of something somewhere between a Les Paul and a 335. I think a 335 sounds more hollowbodyish and the Robin has more girth in the mids.
Of course, this may have a lot to do with the pickups, as 335's have low-output PAFs and the Robin comes with Rio's, which to me are pretty high-output (which might explain some of the thickness). Some lower output humbuckers on the Savoy may make it sound more traditional.
Maybe Dave Wintz will chime in on this one.
The Savoy definately has its own thing going on, and its a VERY good thing.

Jon:
You are pretty much on target there with your description. Old 335's typically had the same pickup in both positions which did not allow for much balance when switching between neck & bridge. If you want to achieve a more traditional layout, just put the Rio Grande Genuine Texas HB's in both slots.
In addition all Savoys are not created equal. A lightweight swamp ash Standard can sound considerably different that a dense mahogany/maple classic.

Dave,
I'm loving my Savoy. I think its absolutely the most beautiful body shape/design I've ever seen on an electric guitar....I get all giddy just looking at it. I have yet to pull it out of the case without getting a reaction from everybody around.
Question: is it at all possible to design a Savoy with a tremolo...and I mean the PRS/Hipshot type, not a Bigsby.
