Hi: I am considering a Savoy. I play mostly jazz. How do you guys think this guitar would work for jazz? Also, anybody know the exact depth of the body? How about the weight? Is the Savoy balanced when you have it strapped on; does it pull on the neck side? Thanks for all input. Dan Sedia

... Some of the questions will require me to spend a little time with my Savoys to give you the specs you're after, and that may take a day or so to get to. So, first, let me say "Welcome to Robinlovers"... Second, I'm curious what you're playing jazz on now.

Hello Smitty: Right now I'm using a carved top guitar by Steve Andersen. It functions well in most situations but I'd like something that won't feedback and is comparable in size to my carved top. I know the Savoy is a lot thinner but it's other proportions appear to fit my needs. Dan

Smitty: I was so excited I forgot to say, "Thnak You" for the welcome to Robinlovers. I certainly hope to own one soon! Dan

Not a problem... The body width on the Savoy is 15" or a nick over. Max thickness is about 2" where the neck meets the body on the underside of the neck, thins to 1 5/8" as you move away from the neck.

The Savoy top is going to be more rigid than your Andersen... Top is carved on top but not underside, so it's probably 1/2" thick by the time you get to the center solid block. The Savoy, in my opinion, splits the difference between a solid body and a traditional "ES" semi-hollow.

There's my first pass; I'll be in and out all weekend if you have other questions. Certainly you should also feel free to call Allen at Robin Guitars on Monday, too.

Smitty: how is the balance of the Savoy? If you have it strapped on is there any pull on the neck side? I'm considering the Ash body. How would you characterize the sound difference between the maple/mahogany and the ash? How about those jumbo frets? I'm used to mediums. Any navigation problems? Thanks again, Dan

Ah, yes, the balance... I'll be back!

Dave Wintz and I talked about maple vs. ash once before... your approach with the ash would generally be the correct route (I have one of each...) As for frets, I don't know why you can't order it with mediums.

I'll go find a slippery strap and get a balance analysis for ya...

Hey Dan,

The Savoy hangs quite well... I put on a strap and literally jumped up and down, and the Savoy settled out before the neck was horizontal. Balanced pretty nicely.

Fair warning...most Robin owners wind up with more than one...

...Are you gonna look at the Bigbsy option?? That Savoy Custom with the jazzbar/jazzbar/bluesbar combo makes my heart race...
