I own a Robin "Ranger" bass, a black "50's style" with a P bass type body (that old style "telecaster" pickguard and chrome control pannel gives it that look) with a modern P/J pick up set up. It has a maple neck and fingerboard with an upsidedown headstock. Let's just say the overall appearence is "something you need to grow used to", but MERCY what tone to die for! One of the best sounding passive basses I ever heard...period...eats my REAL (not reissue) 62' slab board P bass, 66' P bass, and various 70's jazz basses. For what this Robin cost, and based it on how it sounds and plays, vintage dealers should be ashamed what they charge for the old stuff...this is every bit as good! What made me give this bass a chance is years back I played in a band where the guy had a Robin "Super strat" guitar...maybe was called a "Meldey"? can't recall...lighter red metalic paint, Hum/sing/sing pickups, no pickguardd, rosewoodboard, backward headstock...kinda like a Kramer meets dot-board Jackson, but didn't look as "hip"...but the guitar had the same "magic"...TONE TONE TONE!!! I don't see these "Robins" too often, but I never heard other Fenders or Gibson's with this kinda supertone. How??????

Im a Freedom Junkie- had Five of them (Old Blonde and CARed Freedom 1s and mintmist and black freedom 2s and a flametop 2 with Rio Grandes Im still not sure about, this one I still have) ... the black one is currently laying down tracks for a CD soon to be released and a buddy has the Mintmist also for recording......these basses have a depth that really puts a solid bottom on any track......woohoo great forum!!!!!!!!!

I've got an old Freedom, not sure of the year (#10493). I quit looking at other basses after I bought it.
I saw it in 1991 at Bud Chandler's Music in Lafayette, La. It wasn't as flashy as some of the other basses, but I kept being drawn to it. Eventualy I would play only that bass when I came in to BS and drink Bud's coffee. The sound and incredibly smooth action won me over.
I spent all of my time between classes at USL there, and kept gravitating back to the Robin. It had a $1,400 tag on it, so short of hocking my car I wasn't going to own it.
When Bud closed the store down in 1993, his son asked me if I wanted to buy it. I told him there was no way I could pay what he wanted, but he said he'd give it to me for "what he had in it." When he told me that number (much less than $1,400), I ran to the ATM across the street and gave him cash. I bought it and will never get rid of it
I've played everything from vintage instruments to graphite and composite space basses, and have never played any that were as comfortable and responsive as the Robin.
Whenever someone starts teling me how great their P-bass or Jazz or whatever is, I let them play the Robin. No one has ever denied that it is by far a better sounding and playing instrument than any they've ever picked up.
I'll have to refer them to this site now so they can try to find a dealer and get their own. I'm tired of having to turn down offers for mine.

That's probably the same one I purchased,Ken.It has a beautiful red finish with a lot of grian
showing through it.I think it was made in 1993
because the first three letters of the serial#
start with 93.
